Mobile computing devices like smartphones are ubiquitous nowadays. The user interface- and applications on these devices have a great impact on our daily life. It is thus important to open up possibilities and options for people to use these devices according to their wishes and demands in a self determined way.
As Phosh.mobi e.V. we are convinced that this can only happen via free and open source software. We thus support the users and developers of the Phosh project to cooperate in building and using such a software environment for mobile devices that is entirely free software, easy to use and approachable.
Our efforts go beyond providing financial support. Just as the Phosh project takes a holistic approach by implementing features and resolving issues across the entire Linux Mobile stack, we aim to take a similarly comprehensive approach on a societal level by:
- offering informational material on how to use devices in a self-determined, privacy-preserving way
- engaging with individuals, non-profits, institutions, and companies to raise awareness about the problems in today’s mobile computing landscape, its societal impact and ways to improve it
- creating opportunities to bridge the gap between developers and users so everyone can contribute according to their interests, for example by organizing meetups
- attending conferences, community centers, libraries, and classrooms to present our ideas
We chose the organizational structure of a registered non-profit governed by its by-laws because we want to pursue our goals as a diverse group of individuals working together in a democratic way.
