Our current financial situation made it possible to fund our first small research and development project 🥳, thanks a lot to our supporters!

Gotam (a long-time contributor to Phosh-related projects) has taken on the task of implementing mobile data usage monitoring, an important feature for cost control. It will allow users to track their mobile data usage, helping them avoid running out of budget on metered connections.

Similar to other Phosh-related projects like feedbackd, cellbroadcastd or our syncbus interface this feature will be implemented as a reusable service that can be shared with other Libre mobile environments, along with a Phosh-specific user interface component so that it is immediately useful to our users.

Researching and advancing the Free Software stack for mobile devices is part of our by-laws. Our active members (along with other contributors) do this in their spare time or with support from grants from NLnet (for example, from the EU’s Horizon programme). We will continue to take advantage of these excellent opportunities (e.g. for improving dual sim support) and are also applying for other grants as association (more on that soon) to fund people who want to improve the Linux Mobile stack.

Directly funding development tasks is another step towards making Phosh’s development more continuous and sustainable. It allows us to address usability gaps more effectively by prioritizing work based on the available budget and the availability of contributors with the right expertise.
